States taking action
The State AI Collaborative is a nonprofit, nonpartisan platform that helps states navigate the policy opportunities and challenges of AI. We connect states to independent expertise and to one another, so they can learn and act with confidence and speed, and pilot new policy approaches together.
States are making consequential decisions about AI today across a range of important domains, including economic transitions, child safety, cybersecurity, model alignment and transparency, and more. We are building a network and dedicated support for effective decisionmaking.
For state partners, we host collaborative workshops and expert briefings, provide tailored research, and support pilot policy and learning projects.
AI is bringing rapid change to nearly every priority issue area for policymakers. With that change come foundational and pressing questions:
How can we protect and strengthen student learning, and prepare young people for a changing economy?
How might AI affect workers, how can we prepare under uncertainty, and how can we best support workers and communities in navigating these changes?
How can we protect our water systems, power grids, and other critical infrastructure as threats grow?
How can we ensure that the most powerful AI systems are safe?
What are the best tools for protecting people from AI-powered fraud, scams, and misinformation?
How can we keep kids safe and support their well-being?
States are working to address these fast-moving questions under extreme pressure and with severe bandwidth constraints.
We help in several ways:
Peer Exchange
Cross-state calls, working groups, and in-person convenings help officials compare approaches and learn faster together.
Expert Connections
We connect states with experts in universities and civil society directly and through briefings and dialogues.
Shared Projects
Groups of states use the Collaborative to take on common problems together, whether research, pilots, aligned approaches, or creating shared capacity.
Tailored Support
When an office needs more than a conversation, we step in, from catalyzing research and analysis to supporting additional capacity on policy topics.
